Mariculture

by Genevieve (Genny) Anderson, Biological Sciences Department, Santa Barbara City College
Mariculture is the term used when referring to the production (farming) of marine species by man. The broader term called 'aquaculture' is what is used to describe all types of production (farming) of aquatic (water) species, both seawater and fresh water. Some types of mariculture are truly historical whereas others are more modern-day. The modern-day mariculture operations may be for commercial purposes (food or fodder) as well as restoration of declining populations.
